Structural Engineering Department
The department is responsible for the design, documentation and supervision of structural and civil engineering components in all government buildings, institutions, embassies and missions abroad. The department also monitors and checks design work done by private consultants for government projects.
Mandate
Building works
The department provides structural design, detailed drawings and construction supervision of government buildings.
Civil works
The department designs, details and prepares bills of quantities and supervision for implementation of earth retaining structures, sewerage disposal systems, surface water drainage, roads and paved areas for government buildings.
Marine works
The department plans, designs, prepares contract documents, tenders and supervises construction and maintenance of seawalls, breakwaters, jetties, docking and berthing facilities.
Pedestrian Access works
The department plans, designs, prepares contract documents, tenders and supervises construction and maintenance of footbridges and drifts.
River protection
These works involve specialized design and construction supervision of structures to protect land and property from river flooding and erosion.
Mast and towers
The department provides consultancy services for transmission masts and tower structures for various government communication and security installations.
The department also designs elevated steel towers and tanks for water supply to isolated government institutions.
Structural integrity surveys
The department assesses and reports on various structural failures in buildings, earth retaining structures, masts towers etc. It is also called upon to investigate all private buildings that the government intends to buy or rent for office or residential accommodation.
Site investigation and material testing
The department coordinates and oversees all site investigations prior to construction of all government works related to buildings and civils works. During construction of structural elements (concrete, masonry, steel), the department is responsible for quality control including material sampling, testing and certification to ensure the required specifications are met.
